Butterscotch is our life-size interactive pony who walks beside you on her leash, makes happy horse sounds, and responds to your voice and touch. At over 3 feet tall, she’s designed for children who’ve always dreamed of caring for their own pony.
The FurReal Butterscotch pony uses motion sensors in her nose and along her neck to detect when she’s being petted or brushed. Each touch zone triggers a different response — stroke her muzzle and she’ll nuzzle back, brush her mane and she turns her head toward you.

Cleaning the Plush Coat
Butterscotch’s coat can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid submerging her in water or putting her in the washing machine — the internal motors and sensors aren’t waterproof. If her mane tangles, use the included brush or a wide-tooth comb to gently work through knots.
Battery Maintenance
She operates on 4 D batteries installed in a compartment on her belly, secured with a small Phillips-head screw. We recommend removing batteries if Butterscotch won’t be used for more than two weeks. When sounds become quieter or movements slow down, it’s time for fresh batteries. The motion sensors found in many of our interactive pets remain sensitive even as battery power drops, so you may still get responses even when walking features stop working.

When you open the package, you’ll find Butterscotch fully assembled with her saddle blanket and halter already attached. The box includes one adjustable leash that clips to the halter ring, one grooming brush with soft bristles, and one carrot treat accessory.
We also include a quick-start guide showing where to install batteries and how to activate each interactive feature. The guide has a troubleshooting section for common questions like resetting her sensors or adjusting volume. Batteries are sold separately — you’ll need four D-cell alkaline batteries to power her walking and sound features.

Butterscotch walks forward when you gently pull her leash. She won’t walk independently without that leash cue, which gives kids control over when and where she moves. The sensors detect the pull motion and activate the motorized wheels beneath her hooves. She stops when you stop pulling, so children can pause during play without turning her off.
She requires four D-cell alkaline batteries, installed in a compartment on her underside. With average daily play — about 30 minutes of walking and interaction — a fresh set lasts roughly three to four weeks. Heavy use drains them faster, and we’ve found that rechargeable D batteries work well if you want to reduce long-term costs.
She walks best on hardwood, tile, and laminate flooring. Low-pile carpet under half an inch thick usually works fine, but high-pile rugs or shag carpeting can catch her wheels and stop her movement. If she struggles on your carpet, try clearing a path on a harder surface for walking play and use softer areas for stationary grooming and feeding.
We recommend Butterscotch for ages 4 and up. The leash and small accessories like the carrot pose choking risks for toddlers, and younger children may not have the coordination to walk her gently on the leash. The product packaging includes a warning about small parts for this reason.
Spot-clean her plush coat with a damp cloth and a drop of mild dish soap or baby shampoo. Blot the area rather than scrubbing to avoid matting the fur. Never submerge Butterscotch in water or machine-wash her — the electronics inside aren’t waterproof. For sticky messes in her mane or tail, use a barely damp cloth and comb through gently once dry.
Butterscotch only makes sounds when she’s actively being played with — patting her nose, pulling the leash, or offering the carrot accessory. She doesn’t have a continuous background soundtrack. There’s no volume control or mute button, but her default volume level is moderate and designed not to be jarring. When she’s powered off via the switch on her belly, she’s completely silent.
